Counselling and therapy near Newton Abbot

Does life feel like its getting on top of you?
Could you benefit from a place to take some time-out?
... to explore your thoughts and feelings
... to get back on a front foot again
It could help to talk to a counsellor.

The Christmas and New Year period often brings difficult feelings to the surface, and many people struggle with the short dark days of winter. January and February can be a good time to visit a counsellor for support with depression, anxiety, grief old or new, or any other issues that are troubling you.

About me

My name is Jennie Osborne and I have been a practising counsellor in Newton Abbot for the past 4 years. I am committed to providing counselling and psychotherapy in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment at a welcoming therapy centre in the Devon countryside between Ashburton and Newton Abbot . I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP).
You will see more about my experience and qualifications on the Qualifications page.

How we work together

I offer a warm, supportive presence, putting you, the client, at the centre of our work together. I have a variety of skills and experience, which I draw on as appropriate. These include working with
grief and loss,
and depression,
communication skills.

My theoretical background is in person-centred and Gestalt psychotherapy; I also have CBT training and specific training as a bereavement counsellor.
However, I aim to work in a creative and flexible way, responding to each person's unique needs, and relating to the whole person, not only their 'problem', whether that is bereavement, relationship issues, work-related stress or any other. Many people find that mind and body are intimately related, and we can work with relaxation techniques which can relieve both emotional and physical symptoms.

Above all, I will accept you for who you are, without judging either you or the issues that bring you to counselling. No problem is too small - if it causes you distress, it is important. On the other hand, I have experience in working with people whose life history has been violent or traumatic. If I believe that you need more specialised support than I can offer, I will do my best to help you find that.

Visualisation and writing therapy can be an integral part of the counselling process for those comfortable with working in these ways.
I also offer coaching in communication skills
I can accompany those looking for support in exploring their own spirituality.

For most people, though, counselling starts with telling their story to someone who will listen and support without judgement. You, the client, are always in control of the counselling journey.

Some people find that they can experience positive change around a specific problem in just a few sessions, others choose to work for longer and in greater depth on longstanding distress or more complex issues - what is generally described as psychotherapy. I can create a safe space for this exploration and gently support you through it.
I work with individual adults, either fixed term or on an open-ended basis. I also offer telephone counselling by appointment.
